Hi all,

I am waiting on the arrival of my 6 x 2 x 2 1/2 tank and I am going for a tropical set-up. Just wanted to get your thoughts on substrate heating - is it just for the plants or is there real benefit to the fish also?

Great Forum BTW - hope it really takes off.

Hi abs and welcome to the forum :) .

I could be wrong but i'm pretty sure that the substrate heating is mainly for the plants though it would have to heat the rest of the tank also thus keeping your fish warm :p .

Hi abs,the main reason is for plants as it helps promote root growth.

Thanks for the responses - would you say then that substrate heating is not essential for a healthy tank or would you recommend it anyway? Cheers

It is not essential, i've seen many great healthy planted tanks with out it.

It's not essential, but it's an optimum if plants are your thing.
Also because of its significant price premium you really want to love your plants.
