I have a 5 foot semi planted tank that just doesn't seem to get anywhere, plants look healthy but just don't grow, its full of large rainbows, they seem to be fairly hard on the plants , uprooting them and stuff, i never see them doing it though, and i have 2 large plecos (30 cm) in there that i thought might be the culprits, does any one else have this problem?

Though I've never kept rainbows and am not an authourity.
All the rainbow tanks I have seen have been well planted by their owners. So I doubt that they would be hard on them.I have seen larger plecos being more disruptive in planted tanks..

Just my ob's :)

I have had no problems with rainbows uprooting plants. In fact I have just re-arranged the plants, got rid of old growth and replanted many chain sword pups individually in the foreground. If I as much as look at them too long they'll dislodge themselves, that's how lttle their roots are now. But it's been like that since last weekend and they're still there. No, my rainbows are v well behaved..:D

The ones I look after are bastards. They ate $70 of Eleocharis, countless amounts of Hygrophila, Mayaca and Hydrilla in under a week, and have now turned their attention to Microsorium...
No Plecos in the tank, and the only Bristle Nose are 6-7cm.
It may be species-dependent I think, as some of the guys from ANGFA have loverly planted tanks with no dramas at all. Others, on the other hand, concur with my observations. Frustrating? I think so.

Hey Wombat & Woodsy

What kind of rainbows do you guys have?:eek::eek:

FWIW, I have Boesemanii's and Neons, as well as threadfins, and blue-eyes.
Also leftovers from the previous tank: a royal whiptail, cory's and a cople of algae eaters.

I couldn't even begin to list them, as Rainbows aren't really my thing. It's a 900L tank, and it's pretty full. They are all big species though, no Threadfins or Blue Eyes, or things like that. There are some Empire Gudgeons in there too.

That's OK woodsy.

Hey wombat, great selection! Any idea or suspects who nmay be the plant uprooters? Just in case I decide at some stage to expand the range of rainbows I keep.:)

Cheers
