I set up a 400 litre pond a couple of days ago, and am wanting to put purple spotted gudgeons in it. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with these? Are they fairly hardy and easy to keep? Are they available at most pet stores? Do they hang around at the surface or at the bottom? How many can I put in a pond this size, and what male/female ratio?

If these don't work out, are there any other colourful natives I can put in there? They have to be at least 10 cm fully grown and be tolerant of both heat and cold.

purple spotted gudgeon swim on most levels of a tank or pond.
they will definitely wither away once winter hits.
rainbows do a great job with staying at the water's surface, but they too will wither away and die during winter unless you take them inside.
I'd probably go with larger natives like silver perch, 400 litres is more than enough for a couple of large natives.

How about the empire gudgeon. The males in breeding condition are absolutely spectacular.
