Howdy,

As some know my first marine tank (6x2x2) is now up and cycling with around 70kg of live rock.

My salinity at present is .025. I used NSW to fill the entire tank / sump. Now I understand through evaporation that while the water volume decreases, the salt does not? So if I always use RO water (looking for a unit now) for water changes, do I need to add salt at any time?

Will I ever need to add NSW again?

Thanks for any advice :)

No, as far as I know Marc.
From what I know people get a drum of R/O water connected to a float in their sump.
This automatically pumps small ampounts of water into the sump to keep it at its desired level.
You just need to make sure you have back up R/O.
Another way would be to have an R/O filter and water inlet tap under your tank which auto releases when the float tells it too.

I''' be interested in what you do so make sure you post back..

Thanks joz, that's pretty much what I expected. I'm investigating an RO unit to mount on the laundry wall running outside to a water tank for now.

If I have plumbed in some supply pipes (lol), I could have used an auto top up!

I may look into a float switch on the sump ... with a 20l container of RO under the cabinet (I have the room).

Try contacting Peter at PSI Filters, he supplies RO/DI Filters to many aquarist's all over Australia. He is a top bloke and his pricing is pretty good too. You can contact him on his email peter@psifilters.com.au

Yeah I have seen plenty of referrals to Peter.... Is there any particular model you recommend?

Marc,

This is the one I bought, been running it for a few months now and it works a treat, Brisbane water is pretty shocking but using this brings it back to 000ppm. Again if you email Pete from PSI Filters he will send you some options based on what you are using it for what area you are in and will provide with a recommendation. Once again no fuss to deal with either ;)

Cheers
Tony
