G'day there. I would think that a 150W Heater should be suffice for 160Lt's of water. How old is your heater? I didn't think that an Aquaone 150W would go all the way to 38 Degrees C. Strange as I'm unaware that there would be Tropical Fish that would require such conditions? You should not need to add any other heater's (unless maybe your living in Tasmania or something :) ) and in this case you'd opt for a stronger one. If your concerned about it maybe it's faulty. The fish that you have should be comfortable with around 26*C anyway but best to ensure that your equipment is working well though.

I would have to agree with Mick, i would look at changing that heater, it must have a faulty thermostat in it, and thats a big problem. I once had a heater with a faulty thermostat and it boiled all my fish, so my advice is GET RID OF IT!!!!!!
As for the plants , if you are just starting out i would be going for very hardy plants like Java fern and Anubis, i have both of those and they are very easy to keep. What sort of lighting do you have on that tank? lighting is very important .

I can relate to that Wombat. I also had a heater that was doing it's own thing and boiled the water! When in doubt throw out. http://www.thefishtank.com.au/forums/images/icons/icon10.gif
